Chemlok 489 / 456 PVC Injection-Molding Bonding System

Chemlok 489 / 456 is a two-component system for bonding PVC to prepared metals, glass and plastics during injection molding. Chemlok 489 is the resin component and Chemlok 456 is the curative; they form one application system.

Stir the resin before incorporating the curative, then mix thoroughly. The system can be applied by brush, spray, dip or wick methods to clean, dry surfaces. Allow the coating to dry before molding.

Chemlok 456 contains a tracer that fluoresces under low- or medium-intensity UV light, supporting checks for curative in the resin and for the mixed system on the coated surface. Confirm the applicable mixing and processing instructions for both supplied components before use.

The resin-to-curative ratio is 100:4–6 by weight, adding the curative while stirring the resin. Mixed working life is 18–24 hours, depending on ambient temperature and humidity. Xylene or toluene may be used when dilution is needed.

Dry film thickness is 2.5–12.7 µm. Before molding, allow 1–2 hours at 18–27°C and at least 45% relative humidity. Oven-drying alternatives are 4 minutes at 93°C or 2 minutes at 138°C; larger parts may need longer because of their heat-sink effect. For best results, injection mold within 24 hours of application.
