Role in the bonding process
Chemlok 7701 chemically modifies rubber surfaces to improve wetting and subsequent adhesive bonding. It is used with compatible LORD adhesives, including epoxy and urethane adhesives, for bonding cured rubber. Do not apply Chemlok 7701 to metal surfaces.
Suitable materials
Suitable materials include natural rubber (NR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), butyl rubber (IIR), polybutadiene (BR), polychloroprene (CR), EPDM, nitrile rubber (NBR), polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Select the treatment and adhesive for the actual material combination.
Application and handling
Remove contaminants from the rubber surface with a solvent wipe before treatment. Chemlok 7701 requires no mixing. Wiping with a clean cotton rag is the preferred application method; brushing, dipping or flood coating can also be used. Spraying is not recommended because of the material’s reactivity.
Transfer only the amount needed into a new, clean container. Keep metal brush handles and ferrules out of contact with the liquid, and do not use metal containers. Do not return unused treatment to the original container or contaminate it with water or alcohol.
The treatment is complete after the solvent has flashed off, normally in less than 5 minutes. No rinsing is needed. For best performance, proceed with bonding shortly after the solvent has evaporated.
