THIXON 403＋404 Polyurethane Bonding System

System and intended uses

THIXON 403 and THIXON 404 are mixed to form the THIXON 403/404 system. This two-component adhesive can be used as a one-coat system for bonding castable polyurethane and thermoplastic polyurethane at relatively low processing temperatures.

It can also serve as a primer beneath THIXON 405, THIXON 423 or THIXON 412/415 covercoats. Select the coating system for the polyurethane, substrate and processing conditions.

Suitable substrates include metals and alloys, sintered metals, wood, nylon, particleboard, plastics, epoxy resin and cement.

Mixing and application

Mix 403:404 = 1:1 by volume, then continue mixing for 1–2 minutes. At 15–27°C, the mixed solution is dark amber and free of insoluble solids.

Prepare the substrate before coating and keep it free of contamination. Metal surfaces require degreasing and suitable pretreatment. The mixture can be applied by brush, dip or spray. For brush application, the mixture can be used without dilution; apply it in two passes to build the required film thickness. A one-coat adhesive system may still require successive applications of the same adhesive.

Drying between applications

Allow the first application to dry thoroughly before applying the next. Drying takes approximately 20–30 minutes at 15–27°C, with longer drying at lower temperatures. Forced drying at 49°C for 10–20 minutes can shorten this step; drying temperature should not exceed 65°C.

Confirm film build and the subsequent molding or casting cycle for the particular polyurethane and substrate.
