Coating system and materials
THIXON 520-PEF-C is the covercoat in a rubber bonding system, normally paired with a suitable MEGUM or THIXON primer. Compatible elastomers include natural rubber (NR), polyisoprene (IR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), polychloroprene (CR) and nitrile rubber (NBR).
Substrates include hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, polyamide and polyester. An appropriately selected system can withstand humidity, corrosion, heat, salt spray, oil and water exposure.
Preparation and coating
Degrease the metal and use suitable mechanical or chemical pretreatment, such as grit blasting or phosphating. Stir 520-PEF-C thoroughly before use. Maintain agitation during dipping or spraying to keep the solids suspended.
Apply by brush, dip or spray. Brush application normally uses the product without dilution. Where needed, use toluene and/or xylene as diluent, adding it slowly with continuous stirring. The recommended additions per 1 part 520-PEF-C by weight are:
- 0.2–0.3 parts diluent by weight for dipping.
- 0.4–0.6 parts diluent by weight for air spraying.
Film thickness, drying and vulcanization
The recommended dry-film thickness is 15–25 μm. Dry for approximately 30 minutes at 20°C, or use forced drying for 5 minutes at 80°C. Do not exceed 120°C during drying.
The separate recommended vulcanization temperature range is 130–190°C. Set the molding cycle for the rubber formulation and selected primer-and-covercoat system.
