Primer role and compatible materials
THIXON P-11-EF-C forms the primer layer beneath a compatible MEGUM or THIXON covercoat. It can also be used as a one-coat adhesive for selected polar rubber compounds, including nitrile rubber (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) and acrylic rubber (ACM).
Suitable substrates include hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, polyamide and polyester. An appropriately selected primer-and-covercoat system can provide resistance to humidity, corrosion, heat, salt spray, oil and water.
Preparation and application
Degrease metal surfaces and use suitable mechanical or chemical pretreatment, such as grit blasting or phosphating. Mix thoroughly before use and maintain agitation during dip or spray application to prevent settling.
Apply by brush, dip or spray. Brush application is normally undiluted. Ketone diluents such as methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) can be used where dilution is needed. The recommended additions are 0.1–0.3 parts diluent per 1 part primer by weight for dipping, or 0.4–1.0 parts by weight for air spraying. Add the diluent slowly while stirring.
Film thickness and drying
The recommended dry-film thickness is 5–10 μm. Drying takes approximately 30 minutes at 20°C, or 5 minutes at 80°C with forced drying. Air circulation helps the drying process.
The recommended molding and vulcanization temperature range is 120–205°C. Confirm the rubber formulation and complete coating system before setting production conditions.
