Primer and covercoat selection

THIXON P-6-EF is a solvent-based rubber bonding primer for use with compatible covercoats, including THIXON OSN-3-EF-V and MEGUM 538.

Suitable substrates include hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, polyamide and polyester. An appropriately selected bonding system can resist humidity, corrosion, heat, salt spray, oil and water. P-6-EF also offers alcohol resistance.

Surface preparation and coating

Degrease metal surfaces, followed by appropriate mechanical or chemical pretreatment such as grit blasting or phosphating. Mix P-6-EF thoroughly before use and maintain agitation during dipping or spraying to prevent settling.

Apply by brush, dip or spray. Brush application is normally undiluted. Toluene or xylene can be used as diluents where needed. Add diluent slowly while stirring. For 1 part primer by weight, the recommended additions are 0.1–0.3 parts diluent by weight for dipping, or 0.5–1.0 parts by weight for air spraying.

Film thickness and drying

The recommended dry-film thickness is 8–10 μm. Allow approximately 45–60 minutes at 20°C, or use forced drying for 5 minutes at 80°C. Drying temperature must not exceed 120°C.

The recommended molding and vulcanization temperature range is 120–230°C. Confirm the production cycle for the rubber formulation and chosen covercoat.
