Product overview
Chemlok 8116 is a one-coat, water-based adhesive that bonds peroxide-cured elastomers to zinc-phosphatized steel and other rigid substrates during rubber vulcanization. Its resistance to hot oil, hot water and other engine fluids supports use in gaskets, seals and NVH components.
Materials and selection features
Compatible elastomers include peroxide-cured silicone rubber, EPDM, fluoroelastomer (FKM), hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) and nitrile rubber (NBR). Silicone bonding applications include zinc-phosphatized steel, nylon and aluminum substrates.
Most applications require a single coat. The water-based system provides reduced VOC emissions.
Preparation and application
Clean the metal to remove oils, grease, rust and oxide layers. Stir Chemlok 8116 for 10–20 minutes or until the color is uniform, lifting settled solids from the bottom of the container. Do not shake.
Before diluting, confirm that dilution is suitable for the application method and the supplied product version. If dilution is appropriate, use deionized water.
Apply by spray or dip. For best results when spraying, preheat metal parts to 60–65°C before application. The dry-film thickness should be 7.6–17.8 μm.
Allow coated parts to air-dry for 30–60 minutes at room temperature. Forced hot air is recommended to achieve thorough drying. The adhesive cures during rubber vulcanization. Protect the product from freezing.
