Sipiol WL 2015-22P Two-Component Automotive Weatherstrip Coating

Coating function

Sipiol WL 2015-22P is a water-based automotive weatherstrip coating for off-line application. It must be combined with Sipiol WV 21 F curative to form the two-component system.

The coating forms a textured surface and shows good abrasion resistance in rotating textile and denim tests. It combines elasticity and chemical resistance with low friction, reduced glass drag and resistance to sticking to glass. It also helps reduce noise at contact with coated metal and glass surfaces.

Surface preparation and mixing

Remove surface contaminants, then prime the substrate with one of the following: Chemlok 459X, Sipiol WP 8556 or Cuvertin X 8536. Alternatively, surface preparation such as plasma treatment is recommended to improve adhesion on low-polarity substrates. Select the preparation for the actual substrate.

Stir WL 2015-22P thoroughly at low speed before use. While stirring, add WV 21 F at 100 parts coating to 3 parts curative by weight. Filter the mixture through a 250–400 μm sieve. For spray application, keep the coating agitated in the spray container to prevent settling.

The typical working time of the mixture is 8 hours at 25°C.

Application and curing

Apply the mixed coating by brush or HVLP spray at temperatures above 10°C, with substrate temperature no higher than 120°C. The recommended dry-film thickness for optimum performance is 10–30 μm.

Cure at 90–200°C, with dwell time selected according to line speed and oven length. A typical condition is 15 minutes at 130°C. Water can be used to clean the equipment.
